Solid State Relays and Magnetic sensors used for building automation

The automation in buildings means energy saving, security and improvement of the environment.

Air conditioning systems, Lights management, automatic doors and lifts are a few examples of the applications that can benefit from the advantages of celduc’s solid state relays and magnetic proximity sensors.

In this blog, we’ll explore how the use of celduc® solid state relays and magnetic sensors can assist you with these challenges of green transition and increasing security. Let’s discover all the advantages and possible applications of celduc®.

1- Commercial and industrial HVAC applications : Energy efficiency and control solutions

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems can be found almost anywhere to provide thermal comfort to people inside buildings. celduc® relais offers a wide range of Solid State Relays (SSRs) and contactors that can be used in commercial and industrial HVAC systems to keep them running smoothly and reliably. Solid State Relays (SSRs) are used for both heating control and/or motor control.

A lot of these systems still use electromechanical contactors and relays but Solid state relays offer many advantages when used in these systems, such as long life expectancy, no mechanical noise, low input current and fast response.

SSRs can handle almost any type of load used in HVAC systems, such as fans/blowers, motors, compressors and they are perfect for use in heating control applications, where there is a requirement to switch electric heating elements on and off constantly to maintain a certain temperature. In some cases, a more precise temperature control can be achieved by using a proportional power control method such as phase angle control or burst fire control, which can only be done using a solid state device.

Together with monitoring software, Solid State Relays regulate heating and cooling cycles to ensure these systems operate only when necessary and at optimal levels.

The precise temperature control conserves energy and improves indoor comfort, particularly important in climates requiring constant air conditioning.

celduc SWG8 Series of three-phase controllers consist of a 0-10VDC control module and a power module customized for the load to switch. The control module has an analog input isolated from the mains to proportionally vary the operating duty cycle of a heating element (heating element batteries) connected to the power module.

If the most wasted energy is due to inefficient room temperature management, misuse of lighting is largely under estimated. So now let’s see what celduc solutions are in building lighting management applications.

2- Lighting Control in buildings

Built to handle high frequencies of activities with minimal wear and tear, Solid State Relays are used in lighting control systems to automate the switching on and off of lights based on occupancy. This helps to conserve energy, extend the lifespan of lighting fixtures, and reduce overall energy bills.

3- Building fire protection : Smoke ventilation systems

Smoke vents allow Natural Smoke Ventilation. Natural smoke ventilation is crucial to managing fire safety in buildings. It enables smoke to be evacuated efficiently, reducing the risk to occupants and facilitating emergency response. Adequate compartmentalisation and installation that complies with standards are essential to ensure that natural smoke ventilation is effective.

Magnetic Proximity sensors are also used in Smoke ventilation systems and are mounted on smoke traps / smoke vents in order to alert when a smoke extraction or vent hatch is opened. This fire-fighting equipment is essential to prevent the fire from spreading too quickly and to allow a good smoke extraction to protect the occupants. The reliability of a smoke extraction hatch or a mechanical smoke extraction device is essential to ensure the safety of the occupants in a building.

Knowing the condition (open / closed) of these facilities is a real concern for building managers. Indeed, although they are supposed to be closed, sometimes these smoke vents are left open voluntarily or not.

A quick look at the opening of the trap door allows:

  • to act as soon as possible and limit the damage that could occur in case of bad weather,
  • to prevent intrusion into common areas,
  • to ensure that compulsory maintenance operations have been carried out.

What easy-to-install solution for detecting an opening in existing buildings is there?

Two sensors are required in this application, one to indicate the closing of the trap, the other to indicate the open position (a certain opening angle should be guaranteed).

Ventilation systems must also remains in good working order to ensure good smoke extraction and air renewal. Celduc’s magnetic sensor makes it easy to detect the malfunctioning of a ventilation system and to act quickly accordingly.

4- Sensors for Windows/Doors monitoring

Also known as position sensors, these give an easy way to let you know if a door or window is open or closed. The sensor uses magnetic fields to detect whether the door/window is shut (the magnetic fields are touching) or open (they are not touching).

This type of sensor, connected to a communication system (IoT), can inform you when doors or windows in a building have been left open, thus improving security. The data they provide can also help improve energy efficiency in a building.

Reed Switches Magnetic sensors are used for monitoring the state of doors and windows (open or closed). Magnets are mounted on the interior frames of doors and windows, and the reed sensors, on the fixed frames. As long as the doors or windows remain closed, the contact is not activated. Normally Open, or Normally Closed reed sensors can be used depending on the circuit logics but in most cases, normally-open devices are preferred.

5- Sensors for industrial automatic gates

Celduc® relais offers a Highly Durable Proximity Sensor for Tough Environments : PLMA0100. This rectangular Magnetic Proximity Sensor feature full-metal housing. This robust sensor is highly resistant to deformation and corrosion and can be applied in diverse environments including industrial gate opening detection. Our PLMA0100 is also resistant to frequent cleaning processes.

6-Sensors for Lifts

The electrical motors in elevators however should start and stop at the required floors. So a feedback on the exact position of the elevator cabine should be given. This feedback is very accurately provided by latching reed sensors that stay in an actuated state as an elevator passes floors on the way up and stay in a non-actuated state as the elevator passes floors on its way down. These Latching reed sensors are mounted on every floor and are changed state by the magnet on the elevator, as it moves up or down, past each sensor.
